Hujan Locale

If Locavore NXT points to Bali's culinary future, Hujan Locale is a love letter to its past. Chef Will Meyrick, a familiar name on the Southeast Asian food circuit, built the restaurant around heritage Indonesian recipes, many drawn from home cooks and family collections across the archipelago. The name means "local rain," and the menu reads like a tour of Indonesia's regional cuisines.

The atmosphere is more relaxed than Ubud's tasting-menu rooms. The dining room occupies a converted traditional building on Jalan Sriwedari, with exposed brick, vintage photographs, and warm lighting. Dishes arrive family-style: slow-cooked beef rendang from West Sumatra, grilled octopus with Manado-style rica-rica sambal, roasted bone marrow with black nut sauce from Minahasa.

Prices are gentle for the quality, around USD 30 to USD 50 per person for a generous multi-course dinner with drinks. Weeknights rarely need a booking, but reserve ahead for Friday and Saturday.

Love this place! 🌳🩵 The service was so warm and friendly, and you can really tell the staff enjoy what they do. Special thanks to Kak Ita and Kak Evi for being so helpful with their recommendations and even checking in to see if we were enjoying the food. Small gesture, but it made the experience feel extra welcoming. The ambiance is lovely too! comfortable, relaxing, and perfect for a nice dinner. Tonight we ordered the Cumi-Cumi Kalio, Lobster Dumplings, Watermelon Juice, Soda Cap Badak, and Pineapple Granita for dessert. We shared everything between two people, and the portions were just right for dinner. Cumi-Cumi Kalio was delicious. I think it would be even better with rice 😂, but we were already too full! The Lobster Dumplings were also so good (flavorful, savory, and packed with shrimp filling) 🫶🏻 As a bonus, there was live music starting around 7:25 PM, which made the atmosphere even more enjoyable. Great food, great service, and a great vibe overall. Would definitely come back!

The service was great and the food was yummy (just wished the beef rendang to be more tender). The whole fish was very well prepared. It was soft and steamy inside, while the batter was thin and crispy. The grilled pork for me was the highlight. The meat was flavourful and it was well marinated. The place would be slightly brighter, we couldn’t see the food. But still highly recommended.

Great food. Those lobster dumplings were divine. Finally spicy food! :) Sagara cocktail was very delicious. Creme brulee cheesecake was really good too. Service was great, and thanks Evi for all the great recommendations!

Attentive service staff fluent in English. The food comes with flavourful spice and best paired with rice. The bar serves alcoholic cocktails with a local twist. The beef rendang was very well done and the meat still had texture to bite into. The pork satay skewers contained meat chunks infused with a pleasantly smoky charred flavor. The scallop ceviche and slipper lobster dumplings were also a tasty experience. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in central Ubud.

Amazing venue for traditional Indonesian cuisine—great atmosphere, friendly service, and great quality without being overpriced. If you want local flavors in a clean, comfortable setting, this is the place. I ordered the traditional smoked duck with pork sausage, and it was delicious—don’t forget to get the rice to go with it! And it’s a good place for people watching too.
