Apéritif
Apéritif is the fine-dining restaurant at Viceroy Bali, set above the Petanu River valley a short drive from central Ubud. The room is styled after a 1920s colonial dining salon, with its own bar. Executive chef Nic Vanderbeeken, who is Belgian, applies European technique to Indonesian ingredients. Tatler Best Indonesia named it one of the country's 20 best restaurants in both 2025 and 2026.
Dinner is a set menu of five or seven courses. Dishes have included a venison Wellington with foie gras and rendang sauce, and a two-way prawn with laksa and sambal tomat. The wine list is strong enough to have earned a Star Wine List award in 2026.
Five courses cost around IDR 1,700,000++ (about USD 95 before tax and service), and seven courses around IDR 1,900,000++ to 2,100,000++. A vegetarian menu is available. Apéritif serves dinner only, and you can arrange a car through the hotel if you are staying elsewhere in Ubud.
Guest Reviews
We celebrated both our engagement and my fiancée’s 30th birthday with the 7-course tasting menu, and it was an unforgettable experience. The service was outstanding, and every member of the staff was incredibly warm and welcoming. Despite the fine dining atmosphere, we felt completely at home throughout the evening. Each course was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, showcasing great attention to detail and exceptional craftsmanship. After dinner, we enjoyed a drink at the adjoining bar, where some of the staff even joined us after their shift and kindly treated us to a whisky. It was such a thoughtful gesture that truly reflected the genuine kindness of the people working there. Wonderful people with their hearts in the right place. Thank you for an amazing evening. we will cherish these memories for a long time.
We don't need Micheline to tell is this is fine dining at its best. We celebrated my wife's 60th birthday here and it was a triumph. Apéritif was just a short walk from the Kamandalu Hotel where we were staying, and it was the obvious choice for her celebration after a short visit that day. Our expectations were exceeded on all counts. My wife teared up at least twice during the 3-hour-long event. While the atmosphere was exceptional, the food and service were the stars of the evening. Everyone from the friendly and knowledgeable sommelier to our main waiter, Boi (whose enthusiasm, charm, and knowledge of ingredients and preparation of each dish), was first class. This may have been the best meal/experience I have had since eating at the Twin Towers Restaurant in NY in 1997. Don't let the straightforward titles like: Tuna, Heirloom Tomato, etc. fool you. These are highly complex dishes; each one sending you on its own journey while maintaining an elegant intertwined cohesiveness. One last note about the Speak Easy bar where we were served two delicious cocktails; don't skip it! Bravo to all the staff and wake up Micheline!
We had the privilege of dining at Aperitif earlier this week during our stay in Ubud. Boy was our waiter and took exceptional care of us, explaining each dish with precision and care to enhance the culinary journey. We were introduced to multiple team members throughout who were all very attentive, polite and showed passion for what they were doing. Each dish we were served was aesthetically accurate in its plating, and elevated by a careful selected wine pairing. The Riesling paired with the crab risotto was the course that particularly stood out for us! The etiquette of the table side service was a unique touch with the welcome cocktail and bread service. The open kitchen was particularly fascinating, with a numerous chefs piecing each dish together with such a light temperament. The location of the restaurant adds to the more westernised style, away from the more fast paced streets of Ubud.
I ate here to celebrate our wedding anniversary with my partner and selected its three-course menu. First, we were served with the canapés. The corn meringue was amazing. For the entree, I tried beef carpaccio with bone marrow emulsion and my partner tried king prawn with cashew and fermented honey. Her king prawn was much better than my carpaccio. As a main course, I had aged duck with black tamarind consommé. It was amazing, particularly the consommé. My partner had the dorper lamb, which was also really good and had a strong Indonesian cuisine vibe. We had a nice sorbet as pallet cleanser and finally we had desserts. I had klappertaart with coconut ice cream. It was very good. Overall, it was a nice experience. Our server, Rani was very helpful and informative. The manager, Thomas also greeted us and had a nice little chat with us. The venue was beautiful, inspired by the 1920s Dutch colonial era, and filled with some jazz music. Considering the price that we paid, it’s a 5/5 experience.
Such an impressive and remarkable place and experience. From the moment that you step in the attentive service feels amazing. The environment is so sophisticated and art deco that it’s like stepping back in time with modern details. Excellent cocktails and the food is over the top. Incredibly accommodating to any food allergies. We had two gluten free people plus one of them is also allergic to tree nuts and dairy. They presented phenomenal options. The staff is so friendly and attentive and the environment is warm and welcoming. Incredible experience.

More Restaurants in Bali

Cuca
Cuca is Jimbaran's most exciting restaurant and one of the most original dining concepts on the island. Chef Kevin Cherkas, who trained at elBulli and Arzak in Spain and at Daniel in New York, opened Cuca with Virginia Entizne in 2013. He brings a distinctly creative sensibility to a menu built around small, tapas-style plates designed for sharing. The setting is deliberately casual, an open-air pavilion surrounded by gardens, which belies the technical sophistication of the cooking.

Home by Chef Wayan
Home by Chef Wayan sits on Jalan Pantai Pererenan, just west of Canggu. Chef Wayan Kresna Yasa is Balinese, trained in Michelin-starred kitchens and later cooked for the Potato Head group, and he co-wrote the cookbook PAON. His own restaurant serves modern Balinese and Indonesian cooking in the style of a family table. Tatler Best Indonesia 2026 named it one of the country's 20 best restaurants, the only one in the Canggu area.

Hujan Locale
If Locavore NXT points to Bali's culinary future, Hujan Locale is a love letter to its past. Chef Will Meyrick, a familiar name on the Southeast Asian food circuit, built the restaurant around heritage Indonesian recipes, many drawn from home cooks and family collections across the archipelago. The name means "local rain," and the menu reads like a tour of Indonesia's regional cuisines.
