Capella Ubud
Capella Ubud is the most distinctive hotel in Bali and one of the most original anywhere. Designed by Bill Bensley, the architect behind some of Asia's most theatrical properties, it reimagines a glamorous 1800s colonial-era camp through Bensley's signature maximalist wit. The 22 tented retreats and single lodge are scattered through dense rainforest, each one a fantasia of antique furniture, handpicked curiosities, and deliberate excess.
This is not a minimalist Bali experience. The tents, which are permanent structures beneath canvas roofs, feature copper bathtubs, campaign furniture, and private salt-water pools, and the largest accommodation, the Officers' Tent, has its own private dining room. The main pool is set into the jungle canopy, and the farm-to-table restaurant, Api Jiwa, serves accomplished modern Indonesian cooking.
Rates start around USD 800 per night. Capella suits travellers who value design, theatre, and a strong sense of place, and who appreciate a hotel that does not take itself too seriously.

An absolutely outstanding and extraordinary experience. Nestled in the jungle of Ubud, this fascinating hotel is truly one of a kind. Each villa is designed like a luxurious tent and perfectly integrated into the surrounding nature – complete with a private pool and breathtaking views of the jungle. It feels as if you are living right in the middle of paradise. The service is simply exceptional. The entire staff is incredibly warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. Every wish seems to be anticipated before you even express it. The management is also clearly present and ensures that everything is perfectly organized down to the smallest detail. Nothing is left to be desired here. It is a place full of magic, tranquility, and beauty – a stay you will never forget. A truly unique hotel and an extraordinary experience that I wholeheartedly recommend.
Excellent experience at ubud capella. We stayed there for 3 nights in the valley tent. Each tent is designed with different themes and is comfortable despite in a humid rainforest. Service is outstanding, the team took care of everything and enhanced our stay by arranging various interesting activities. They always try their best to fulfill our request. Everyone we met in the hotel know our names and what we are up to, which is amazing. Special thanks to AYU, Sonny, Yuni, Yogi, who are so hospitable and make our stay truly unforgettable.
★★★★★ The most unique hotel stay I have ever experienced. Capella Ubud served as the perfect backdrop to our short but meaningful stay in Ubud. Stepping into the property feels like being pulled through time — back to an era when adventure and wonder were still very much alive. Or perhaps more precisely, like being transported straight into the pages of The Jungle Book. I cannot stop thinking about the rooms. They are genuinely cool and interesting — easily the most memorable I have encountered in any hotel, anywhere. The commitment to concept is total and commendable, though it comes with a few practical notes: expect to climb the equivalent of six flights of stairs every time you leave the room, and the open-plan bathroom (no separating door) takes some getting used to. Minor adjustments for a truly exceptional experience — come prepared and you will love every bit of it. Dinner at Api Jiwa was everything: beautifully curated, deeply satisfying, and made all the more special by a chance encounter with Executive Chef Arvie — a fellow Cebuano — which gave the meal a warmth and personal touch I was not expecting. The cultural excursion to Iwan Gayama Art School— where local children keep the Keliki painting tradition alive through free arts education — was one of the most quietly moving things I have witnessed on any trip. And the crown jewel of our stay: a Balinese Melukat purification ritual held at the Wos River Temple — a private village riverside temple that only Capella Ubud guests are permitted to enter as outsiders. Deeply spiritual, entirely intimate, and exactly what we needed. Capella Ubud does not offer comfort in the conventional sense. It offers something far rarer: wonder.
An utterly incredible stay. From the moment we arrived, Capella Ubud made clear that every detail — no matter how small — had been considered with extraordinary care. The team was wonderful: attentive, warm, and effortlessly thoughtful at every step. It is the kind of hospitality that makes you feel genuinely looked after. The experience itself was nothing short of magical. Set within the rainforest, every moment felt deeply intentional — from the design of the tents to the gentle rhythm of the day. There were quiet pauses where time seemed to slow, where we found ourselves simply taking it all in. That, to us, is the highest luxury. What sets Capella apart is how seamlessly the setting, service, and spirit of the place speak a single language. The attention to detail — from the thoughtful touches in the tent to the way each experience unfolds — reflects a team that is deeply, genuinely proud of what they create together. A very special thank you to Christian Jaquier and the team, whose warmth and thoughtfulness throughout our stay made an already exceptional experience feel truly personal. You made us feel completely at ease and wonderfully cared for. We will absolutely be back.
The most incredible hotel I have ever visited. Hidden in the jungle you can see and hear the nature, the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the food is delicious. The staff helped us arrange our trips and we got a complementary tour of the rice terraces with the ranger where we learnt all about the farming and traditions. Also had a wonderful day getting a tour of the island The rooms have an incredible design and are amazingly functional. The communal area has a pool table with cocktails and afternoon tea included. Would love to go back!

Alila Villas Uluwatu
Alila Villas Uluwatu made its name as the clifftop resort that proved Bali could do cutting-edge contemporary architecture. Designed by WOHA, the Singaporean firm known for gravity-defying tropical buildings, it is a study in clean lines, infinity edges, and a cage-like bamboo structure that houses the spectacular Warung restaurant.

Ayana Resort Bali
Ayana occupies a vast clifftop estate above Jimbaran Bay, with around 290 rooms spread across three connected properties: Ayana Resort, Ayana Segara, and the ultra-premium Ayana Villas. The scale is larger and less intimate than the neighbouring Four Seasons, but the facilities are staggering: a dozen restaurants, a private beach, an enormous spa, and Rock Bar, possibly the most famous bar in Bali, built on natural rocks at the base of the cliff.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay
The Four Seasons Jimbaran was one of Bali's first genuine luxury resorts, and a recent renovation has kept it firmly at the top of the southern coast. The 147 villas are terraced above the bay, each with a private plunge pool and an outdoor shower garden, and the layout, modelled on a Balinese village, gives the resort an unusual sense of place for its scale.
