Bilacus
In Bellagio, the waterfront restaurants along the lungolago tend to trade on location rather than quality. For better cooking, head uphill to the quieter streets behind the waterfront, where Bilacus serves reliable Lombardian cuisine in a pleasant courtyard in the old town.
Handmade pasta, lake fish, and seasonal dishes are done well and without fuss, and the courtyard setting is a calm retreat from the day-tripper crowds.
Expect around EUR 35-60 per person. A dependable choice in a town where the obvious spots can disappoint.
Guest Reviews
Bilacus Ristorante – Bellagio Review Bilacus was recommended to us as a good local restaurant with excellent food, and we decided to give it a try during our stay in Bellagio. Since Bellagio is such a popular destination, we expected most of the diners to be tourists, and that was indeed the case during our visit. We had a 7:00 PM reservation and were among the first guests seated in their beautiful courtyard patio. The setting is charming and romantic, with a gravel-stone floor that adds to the atmosphere. One small tip: if you’re wearing heels, be careful walking on the uneven surface. The only issue we encountered was with our seating. When we were first seated, my husband was facing directly into the sun, which was shining into his eyes. He politely asked if we could move to a nearby table in the shade. We were initially told the restaurant was fully booked. When he pointed out that the other table appeared available, we were told again that they were fully booked, and then that the sun would be setting soon. Considering it was only 7:00 PM and sunset wasn’t until after 9:00 PM, that explanation didn’t really make sense. After asking a third time, we were eventually moved to the next table. It wasn’t a major issue in the grand scheme of things, but it did feel like an unnecessary struggle for a simple request. That aside, the food was excellent. Everything we ordered was flavorful, well prepared, and enjoyable. The warm evening weather added to the pleasant atmosphere, and once we were settled, we had a very nice dining experience. Overall, Bilacus delivered on the quality of the food and the lovely setting. While the seating situation could have been handled more graciously, we still enjoyed our dinner and would recommend it to visitors looking for a pleasant evening meal in Bellagio. 4 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Incredible high-end Italian food and atmosphere. As an American, the pasta and lamb chops were unlike anything I have ever had. I highly recommend for a fine dining experience here in Belagio.
Ristorante Bilacus was so good we came here twice—once for lunch and then dinner the following day. The staff is incredibly kind. The restaurant is located on a rooftop under a grape vine terrace. When I inquired about the grapes, the server pulled a few off the vines to allow us to try and explained the variety in such great detail. It was one of the few places in Bellagio where I felt like the staff was proud of the food and experience they were providing. For lunch, I recommend the burrata of course. The caserecce with fish sauce was delicious as well as the tagliolini with candied tomato sauce. For dinner the tagliolini with black truffle was fine, but on the plain side. The stars of the night are definitely their catch of the day and grilled meat of the day. They are large enough for 2-4. When I say large, I mean LARGE. There’s a beautiful presentation of the fish/meat before they debone and cut off to the side. They’re happy to let you record the deboning as it’s quite the spectacle. Highly recommend making a dinner reservation if you find yourself in the center of Bellagio!
The food was good, but the portions were quite small. You need to make a reservation if you want a table with a lake view.
We had a great meal. This restaurant tends to be not as busy as some others close by (if you don’t know about it) because the amazing patio is hidden from view. They had a 2 or 3 course option with a lot of flexibility in how you pair the courses. Tons of nice wines. The wine I got by the glass was great (a local white) could be a bit cheaper would have been nice. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. As a bonus, they have a peakaboo view of the lake from a few tables and probably more shade in the summer when vines are green.

Albergo Milano
Varenna, on the eastern shore, is quieter and less polished than Bellagio, which is exactly its appeal. The waterfront is lovely, with a narrow lakeside promenade and a handful of restaurants that catch the afternoon sun and the views across to the western mountains.

Crotto dei Platani
A crotto is a traditional Lombard restaurant built into or against a natural rock formation, using cool air from mountain caves as a natural refrigerator, a technique that predates electricity by centuries. Crotto dei Platani, in the small village of Brienno on the western shore, is one of the finest examples. The terrace extends over the water beneath enormous plane trees, and on a still summer evening it is as atmospheric as dining gets.

Il Sereno Al Lago
Il Sereno Al Lago, at the Patricia Urquiola-designed Il Sereno hotel in Torno, holds a Michelin star and delivers a more contemporary experience than most of the lake's fine-dining rooms. Chef Raffaele Lenzi's cooking is built around clarity and precision: dishes centre on two or three core flavours, executed with impeccable technique and presented with modernist restraint.
