Mandapa is one of fewer than a handful of Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties worldwide, and its setting in the Ayung River gorge just outside central Ubud is a large part of why it earns that designation. The 60 suites and pool villas are terraced into the valley walls, looking out over the river, dense jungle, and working rice paddies that the hotel maintains with its own farmers. Arrival begins with a Balinese blessing, and the cultural programme that follows is genuinely curated rather than ornamental.

The riverbank spa ranks among the best on the island, and the dining is unusually strong for a resort of this size. Sawah Terrace overlooks the rice terraces, while Kubu sets diners in cocoon-like bamboo pavilions suspended above the water. Service is the anticipatory, detail-obsessed style that the Reserve badge promises.

Rates start around USD 600 per night for a suite and climb past USD 1,500 for pool villas in peak season. For travellers whose Bali trip centres on Ubud rather than the coast, it is difficult to better.
