Alila Villas Uluwatu made its name as the clifftop resort that proved Bali could do cutting-edge contemporary architecture. Designed by WOHA, the Singaporean firm known for gravity-defying tropical buildings, it is a study in clean lines, infinity edges, and a cage-like bamboo structure that houses the spectacular Warung restaurant.

The villas are all-pool, ranging from one to three bedrooms, each with a private cabana and a layout engineered to maximise the ocean view. The famous birdcage spa pavilions, suspended above the cliff, are among the most photographed hotel interiors in the world, and the Sunset Cabana Bar, cantilevered over the cliff edge, is the place for an evening drink.

Rates start around USD 450 for a one-bedroom villa. Alila appeals to design-conscious travellers who appreciate modernist restraint, a deliberate counterpoint to the maximalism of Capella Ubud.
